The door of the desert : ouarzazate


The city of Ouarzazate (warzazat Tamazight, Tifinagh: ⵡⴰⵔⵣⴰⵣⴰⵜ; ) is a city in southern Morocco and the capital of the province of the same name. It is nicknamed "the door of the desert."

Located at the meeting of the valleys of the wadi Ouarzazate and Dades (from the High Atlas) that make up the wadi Draa downstream of their confluence, it is the nerve center of a vast southern region Moroccan. Ouarzazate evokes both the southern foothills of the High Atlas and the nearby desert.


His countless kasbahs adobe, mountains and arid plains, green valleys and oases, palm groves and red or ocher villages to the charm of this region and give it a tourist attraction.

The symbol of the city is the Kasbah Taourirt (the cons) that belonged to the Glaoui, it was built in the mid eighteenth century. It is represented in the new notes of 50 dirhams and is adjacent to the medina.

The agglomeration of the Grand Ouarzazate extends the south side of the river through the village of Tabount - sometimes called "Ouarzazate-South" - part, as the Kasbah Tifoultoute, rural town in Tarmigte.


In 1928, the French colonial power made a garrison town. Militarily, it is the basis of aviation against the famous tribe of Ait Attas who fights fiercely against the troops of Henri de Bournazel, ("the man in the red cloak," killed in Morocco in 1933) until 1934 , when the rebel leader Assou Oubasslam goes to the French people to avoid the massacre entrenched in the mountains.

The city of Ouarzazate is booming in the tourism and film plans. Ouarzazate has an international airport and is accessible by road from Marrakech (4 hours by bus, taxi 3:30) via the Tizi n'Tichka.


It is one of the most popular Moroccan sites by filmmakers from around the world. Besides the scenery, one of the film assets of this place is the quality of light, with bright sunshine on average 300 days a year. The winning consortium was appointed in September 2012, following an international tender. It consists of ACWA companies (Saudi Arabia), Aries Ingenieria y Sistema (Spain), TSK (Spain) that have started construction. For the second step (Noor 2 and 3), a new tender was launched and companies were pre-qualified for the final.
