Ifrane : The European City of Morocco


Ifrane is a town and urban commune of Morocco, with 30 000 inhabitants located in the Middle Atlas at 1713 meters altitude.it is the capital of the province of Ifrane, in the administrative region of Meknes Tafilalet.

Ifrane, Middle Atlas Moroccan city is characterized by its European urbanism. It is the capital of the province of Ifrane, with an area of 3 573km² and is administratively composed of two municipalities (Ifrane and Azrou), five caïdats (Tizguit, Dait Aoua, Ain Leuh, Timahdit and Irklaouen) and eight rural communes ((Tizguite), Dait Aoua, Ain Leuh, Sidi El Mekhfi or Sidi Addi, Timahdite Ben Smim, Oued Ifrane and Tigrigra. According to the new administrative division, the province is part of the Meknes-Tafilalet region. 

The human presence in the region dates back to the Neolithic as evidenced caves such as those (Tizguite) and archaeological remains dating back to prehistoric times, there are 50 000 years, the discovery of Aterian camps (characteristic culture of Paleolithic Maghreb) by the group of researchers from the Institute of Sciences of Archaeology and Heritage (INSAP) to Azrou Michlifen near Ain Leuh (cave ifri Ouberid) Zerouka, Ghabt, Al Bahr and Itto and El Hajeb and found the remains (bones, objects ...).

Ifrane will be inhabited later by a population derived from two large Amazigh-speaking tribes Tamazight Morocco, Ait M'guild , Ait M'tir and a part of ait seghrouchen, nomadic tribes who move between the green pastures and Timahdite Azrou to the ends of Zayanes country.

Ifrane has a very humid and temperate climate with an annual rainfall of 1498 mm and an annual average temperature of 10.8 ° C. The northern slopes of the Middle Atlas mountains is indeed the wettest region of Morocco after the Rif Mountains. The rainfall occurs mainly in winter. The mountains of the Middle Atlas are then in the path of disturbances from the Atlantic. In winter it snows a lot in the city.
